With rising temperatures, lawn care is once again coming into the focus of municipalities, sports clubs and operators of parks and both public and private gardens. On the way to achieving the perfect turf, it's worth taking a closer look at the actual main area of application. Because "not every lawn tyre is equally suitable for every aspect of lawn care," says Svend Burkhard, head of the Lüneburg Bohnenkamp site and specialist in small tyres.
When is it time to change lawn tyres?
For a fresh start into the lawn season, it makes sense to take a look at the tyre material. After long periods of inactivity during the winter months, the tyres of lawn mowers and tractors often lose air. In that case, users should look out for cracks in the tyre sidewall. Such damages can affect the driving properties and leave visible traces on the lawn area during use. Worn tread blocks also reduce traction and significantly affect cornering behaviour. Not least, the self-cleaning properties of lawn tyres are lost: freshly mown grass sticks more quickly to worn tyres. In these cases, it is time for new tyres.
What characterises a good lawn tyre?
With lawn tyres, the primary concern is not grip but rather the protection of the surface through the lowest possible ground pressure. The lawn and the turf should not be compacted or damaged in any way by the maintenance vehicles. "Without offending too many professional football clubs, the golf course is the real crowning glory of lawn care," emphasises Svend Burkhard. "Tyres for such surfaces more resemble reinforced tubes." Even if that is a somewhat pointed phrase, tyres for lawns exhibit a whole range of properties which optimise them for maximum soil conservation.
- Lawn tyres are made of very soft and only slightly wear-resistant rubber compounds. On firmer surfaces they wear out quickly.
- Lawn tyres must also deliver flawless performance at extremely low tyre pressure, which ensures a large contact area.
- Lawn tyres have heavily rounded shoulders for cornering that is gentle on the lawn and soil.
Special case: treads for lawn care on a slope
When working on sloping surfaces and hills, naturally reliable grip and sufficient traction become more important. But there are also suitable lawn treads for these scenarios, which, with more pronounced shoulders and a higher contact area, provide lawn protection and grip on the ground at the same time. Bohnenkamp offers suitable specialist solutions here, such as the Turf Trac from Carlisle or the Kenda K502.
Lawn tyres from BKT, Deli, Kenda and Carlisle in the Bohnenkamp range.
The 2023 Bohnenkamp AG lawn tyre portfolio includes numerous treads from the four manufacturers BKT, Deli, Kenda and Carlisle. The range extends from budget tyres with an outstanding price-performance ratio to high-end tyres for professional continuous use on well-maintained green areas.
Lawn tyres from BKT
The manufacturer BKT produces various excellent lawn tyres, which, thanks to their high load capacity and available large sizes, are also suitable for use on heavier machines. For example, the BKT tread LG 306 is often found on municipal tractors.
Lawn Tyres from DELI
The Deli brand shines in the field of lawn tyres with a remarkable price-performance ratio. This good performance on lawns at a fair price has also attracted machine builders; many ride-on lawnmowers come off the assembly line with Deli lawn tyres as standard. The brand focuses on small and medium lawn tyre sizes and has set a standard in the lawn tread sector with the S-365.
Lawn tyres by Kenda
The company Kenda carries a wide range of treads in the lawn sector. It ranges from high-performance budget tyres in smaller sizes to the Kenda K500 Super Turf, a heavy-duty professional tread for seasonal continuous lawn use on large areas.
Lawn tyres by Carlisle
The American tyre manufacturer Carlisle is well known as a widely used OE tread for the US tractor brand John Deere. Even in the field of lawn care, the company sets the standard with a whole series of qualitatively convincing treads like the Turf Saver.
Don't forget: change lawn tyres in autumn!
Changing lawn tyres is also considered at the end of the season in autumn. Larger vehicles in particular are in operation all year round and seamlessly switch from lawn to winter service. However, in winter use, lawn tyres wear out excessively quickly. Their rubber compound is not suitable for solid surfaces such as cycle paths and footpaths. Additionally, heavy attachments such as snow blowers or ploughs often exceed the load capacity of lawn treads. Therefore, it's important to change to more rugged tyres in time for the start of winter. Those who wish to save themselves this effort and also cultivate less prestigious lawn areas can - for example in municipal use - resort to uncompromising solutions that can be used all year round with a harder rubber compound while respecting lawn preservation.
